DARQ DREAMZ

A bit late for a Halloween post, but I never needed my favorite holiday as an excuse to dip into the darker dreamier parts of myself.

Any fan can see that my fascination with nature and the occult has been a steady inspiration for many of my works, but the medium of photography and the transient nature of being a queer person is symbiotic when exploring these arcane influences.

It has been a beautiful Autumn in Montreal, and I've been all the more inspired by the vivid contrasts, and the deep shadowy supernatural bite that Fall seems to bring.

So, I have put together, a collection of photos of models and Autumnal nature that I've been working on between the demise of summer into Autumn, inspired by my DARQ DREAMZ (and recent obsession with misspelling everything).

Alongside are some words breifly expressing my thoughts on photography as a supernatural mode of transport, other worldly spirits, and their relationship to my queer identity.

Being a pisces, I'm terribly indulgent when it comes to escaping reality and creating worlds of my own-- Worlds others often want to join me in! With respect to the historical paranormal beginnings of the medium, photography has always felt like the art form that can actualize my relationship with these rather intangible dream worlds. Photography is the medium that allows me to be a medium.

There must also be a correlation between queer people's transient "between worlds" qualities, and their ability to communicate with entities beyond this pre-defined reality.

In Aboriginal American cultures, transgendered people are commonly believed to be chosen by a divine-force as "Two-Spirited", as their ceremonial identity, representing both a male spirit, and a female spirit. Their "between" nature endows them with the power and honor of communicating with the divine, healing, magics and the retrieval of souls.

A little bit of my own folklore, as I am of total Hungarian descent: In Pagan Eastern Europe there were men named Calusari who ritually embodied a third or alternate gender, wearing feminine attire, waxing feminine mannerisms while brandishing a sword to worship their Goddess, Doamna Zinelor, "Mistress of the Fairies". These goddess worshipinning transgendered shamans would heal, cure possession, and commune with the fairies through dance, never allowing their virginity to be lost to a woman, in fear they may lose their powers.

Like ghosts, Fey, or 0ther-worldly Spirits (how you chose to perceive them), the non-static paradoxical freedom of queer peoples truly defy the shape and form of our physical world, redefining our concepts of polarities, body politics, and spirituality.

Some of the photos added to the collection are from a series about a dying breed of incestuous modern witch boys forced to practice their rituals in an over populated decaying city, devoid of nature and solitude.

The great classics of early nude male photographraphy, my most adored turn-of-the-century illustrators, and a fist full of Winter nostalgia has inspired my decision to post my more classically influenced pieces, as well as some works by my favorite illustrators as a homage to an era that has greatly inspired my own creations.

AVORIO is my first homage to this style of early photography. The model who gorgeously embodies my Muse in this series, is a good friend of mine.

Below is a few works from one of my favorite painter/illustrators, German born SASCHA SCHNEIDER. There were a lot of supernatural and homoerotic influences in his works, and he was recognized for his work through many of famous novelist Karl May's publications.

Throughout the next few weeks I will continue posting works of past and present as my ODE TO THE CLASSICS.

Her sovereign Sunset's secret lover: Acolyte to her violent red desire. Last weekend, I photographed the eighteen-year old model, as my HIEROPHANT for the most recent spread featured in Ignacio Lozano's GUAPO magazine.

The duty of the HIEROPHANT is to draw the divine down to the physical Earth. He performs the rite of eventide, shaping the intangible, inconceivable beauty of the Universe into warm flesh in the palm of his hand. His body is the altar on which the Spirit and the Kingdom commune. Much like the Artist, whose duty is to stay pious to his vision, embodying an axis between his/her dreams and reality.

Feature in Summer issue of Pref No. 33

In stores today is the new Summer issue of Paris-based magazine Pref Mag No. 33, featuring a 7-page spread of my series Economerotics (Page 62-69). Accompanying the spread is an article about sex and exhibitionism by Bruce Benderson. Also, for your viewing pleasure, is a photograph of my naked self smelling my ginch for an article about jock-strap whorship.

Each Summer, PREF releases an plastic-enclosed issue which allows frontal nudity to make it to print, and they always ask me to contribute, as I have been happily doing for a couple of years now.

I used to have a Holga camera when I was 16. I, an angsty teen at the time was unable to be as careful as one should be with a camera made of plastic, had knocked the damn thing into pieces.

Holga is a cheaper, medium format, plastic toy camera appreciated for it's reliably unreliable results. The plastic construction and simple lens creates unique photos often with blurred distorted edges, vignetting, and flares from light leaks. The double exposure option c'est tres bon.

I wanted to play around with this medium again, now that I have a half a clue what I am doing so I bought another this past week and did some test shots with a beautiful young Greek friend of mine, Andoni. The above being one of the results.

CRUDE INTERVIEWS & BOY HEART-BREAK

Last month, I had the interesting opportunity of doing a "sex-chat" style interview with Angelica Le Mihn, Sex-Columnist for NIGHTLIFE Magazine. The name of the article, aptly dubbed: "HUGE, UNCUT WANGS".

NIGHTLIFE is the one-stop for all the arts and scenester activities Montreal has to offer, and it caters to a young psuedo-subversive audience. I didn't quite know what to expect, but I have to say I nearly polished off a bottle of wine and she ended up being a pretty entertaining internet date.

The publication hit the shelves at an awkward time for me, as I just ended a 2 1/2 year relationship with a most lovely boy, Colin (whom I loved very hard), and he is mentioned as my "yummy bf" (and then some) in the article amid all the boy-heart-break.

I'm happy for all the things he and I explored together, and it will take a lot to replace the beauty he added to my life. I wish him the best, and look forward to explore the vastness that my future has to promise.

As for the article, it's not my most eloquent, but it's a good cut-and-paste laugh.

REMEMBER SUMMER?

It was not so long ago, but summer seems like but a sweet distant memory. Since it's so fucking cold here in Montreal, lets warm up on a little summer reminiscence:

Last August, my series "Android" was displayed in the Summer 08 "Sensual or Sexual?" issue of the Paris-based magazine Pref Mag No. 27.

The photos are accompanied with an article about me, and some of my thoughts on the piece; However, it's in French. I DO know what I was thinking when I was first sketching out this series (as all my series start as illustrations), and the gist is: Technology is addictive. Rapid technological advance is suicide. Eden can be considered as pre-industrial world, the long stillness before the machine, and the like. This was but one of the series I shot along this line, while the others are pending publication.

Halloween is certainly my favorite Holiday. It's a day where we can celebrate what many of us fear the most, Death.

On Halloween morning (since I was a small boy) I always start the day by leaving out food for the dead, and a funeral lantern lit so that the lost souls may find their way.

For this special occasion, I shall leave you with a few brand new BEEFCAKE inspired SELF PORTRAITS. A mix of 50's porn, and vintage "Beef Cake" erotica.

The Nude Male: 21st Century Visions

David Leddick's newest publication "The Nude Male: 21st Century Visions", hit the stores this past week.

"In 'The Nude Male' David Leddick has assembled the latest and most current survey of the male nude form, as seen through the eyes of today's most important and influential artists".

I am pleased to be featured alongside some of my favorite artists in the field, most especially: Anthony Goicolea, Pierre et Gilles, Vivienne Maricevic (j'adore!), Slava Mogutin, Christophe Chemin, Greg Gorman, John Currin, Dimitiris Yeros, and friend, Ryan Pfluger.

My feature includes a collection of some of my early photos which span across 3 pages (pg. 135-137), and a short bio and commentary written by David, himself:

"MIKEL MARTON is among the newest and most promising faces in the field of male nude photography. He says "I aim to challenge traditional censorship regarding male nudity by blurring the line between what some might find as 'pornography' and 'art'." By placing his models, and himself, within a modern world of technology, he has shown a unique eye for composition and lighting. Though they are strong, they are not raw and are always infused with beauty.

Now living in Montreal, Marton grew up in a small Canadian town, which he believes motivated him to use photography to confront oppression."
